Springvale RoadWhen it came to helping the Victoria State Government implement its AUS$38bn Transport Plan - creating a safer and more reliable rail network - Springvale Road level crossing was the first to be tackled. With more than 50,000 cars, 218 trains and 5,000 pedestrians sharing the same space every day, relocating Nunawading Station under Springvale Road removed one of Melbourne's busiest road rail level crossings. Exemplar collaboration with our Alliance partners - John Holland, KBR Pty Ltd, VicRoads, Department of Transport Victoria, and Metro Trains Melbourne - enabled delivery of this project faster and within budget, with minimal disruption to rail and road operations in a highly constrained site. |

Key outcomes were: an alternative platform design configuration was adopted that allowed construction outside of the live rail environment; Our team used 3D modelling, a high level of 4D planning and elemental station design to assist with on-site co-ordination; Breaking the design of the station into elemental pieces improved safety and ease of installation, and pre-fabrication of materials off-site further cut construction time; Transport planning assessments meant that a planned 10-day Springvale Road closure was chosen to replace 12 weeks of temporary lane closures; and the project achieved a rail shutdown in 10 days compared with the original plan of 35 days through proactive input from all Alliance team members. By successfully lowering the railway line under the road and relocating Nunawading station, the project has improved safety and reduced traffic congestion. Better facilities for bus and train commuters and safer pedestrian crossing conditions have also been achieved. |
