Melbourne Rectangular Stadium

Scheduled to open in 2010, the Melbourne Rectangular Stadium will be a world-class event and sports administration complex accommodating 31 000 fans for soccer, rugby league and rugby union matches.

Arup brings its unrivalled skills and global experience in structural and civil engineering design to the development of this new stadium. With structural ingenuity in support of the architectural vision, our solutions will ensure successful delivery of the stadium and its associated infrastructure.

For example, our use of a preset GenerativeComponents (GC) model made it possible to quickly regenerate a number of different geometrical combinations that were used for optimisation studies of the cutting-edge bio-frame roof. The innovative structural solution has resulted in an efficient and cost effective final design that will use 50% less steel than a typical stadium roof of the same size.

The stadium project is being delivered through a partnering approach with Major Projects Victoria, Cox Architects and Planners, Grocon, Sport and Recreation Victoria and the Melbourne and Olympic Parks Trust.
