Maari Wellhead Platform

The Maari oil field lies in a remote location off the coast of New Zealand. In 100m of water, the area is subject to 20m high waves and wind gust speeds in excess of 160km/h. Due to the harsh conditions, an innovative solution was required to allow exploration of these oil reserves.

An oil-drilling platform based on Arup's DrillACE concept - successfully implemented in 2004 for the Yolla platform in Bass Strait, Australia - was the solution, adapted for the deeper water and harsher conditions of offshore New Zealand.

Arup used cutting-edge technology to perform a geotechnical analysis for in-place and installation conditions, and adopted new fabrication methodologies for the jacket erection.

Arup's innovative solutions allowed the exploration of a previously untapped oil reserve that would otherwise have laid dormant due to the remote location.
