Meet The Team

William Spraggon

Structural Engineer

My first experience of Arup was at a Uni presentation, and to be honest they just wowed me with the breadth and depth of their portfolio and the global opportunities.

When I started I worked on a new type of pedestrian bridge that employed tensegrity, before moving on to having design control over ‘my own’ building. It’s quite daunting to be thrust into a big project, but I needn’t have worried. An immense amount of support is available at Arup. We’re all connected and the networks make it easy to share experience and knowledge.

Today I use cutting-edge in-house software for design and optimisation studies and I’m currently working on a high-rise office building that is aiming to meet a 6 star Green Star environmental rating. It’s a complex design that has required a lot of precise modelling and 3D analysis to make it work. In the last 12 months, the building has risen from a shapeless hole in the ground to a height of several storeys.

I love seeing the results of my hard work set in steel and concrete – transformed from a sketch to reality. What I do leads to a real product that you can physically connect with and has a positive impact on the community. Of course another great aspect of Arup is that you can achieve results very quickly. Over the past year, I’ve completed my graduate development program and had the opportunity to attend conferences, seminars and networking events to extend my technical skills and professional exposure.

As well as being a Champion for Sustainability and part of the Drivers for Change initiative, I’m also involved in the Design and Technical Executive to improve training, research and development and thought leadership opportunities. In these roles I get to explore options that shape the future of the Arup business. I hope to continue that with an overseas placement in London, where I can gain international experience, further my training and development and create lasting professional networks with some of the brightest minds in the business.
