Infrastructure Practice

Of all the companies I looked at, Arup really stood out as understanding the sustainability challenge, and walking the talk. I felt that the Arup culture matched my values, and I haven’t been disappointed by the huge raft of initiatives going on across the organisation taking Arup through the sustainability journey.

I joined the small Geotechnical group in Melbourne as a Geotechnical Engineer and in my first two years became involved in some large projects including the Regional Rail Link and Sunbury Electrification Project. These projects are really important for the future of Melbourne and it has been exciting following them through aspects of concept and detailed design, through to managing the geotechnical aspects of construction.

In my first few roles I was responsible for managing subcontractors, undertaking small scale site investigations, verifying construction and contributed to a whole bunch of designs. I’ve also loved getting involved in Arup’s humanitarian engineering and community partnering with projects throughout Australia and East Asia, in particular working with Engineers without Borders.

After the devastating earthquakes in Christchurch I really wanted to do something that would actually help the city where I’d studied for 6 years. An opportunity with the Earthquake Recovery came up and I have been returning to Christchurch for short stints for the latter half of 2011. Arup’s very supportive like that – there are heaps of opportunities available to work in other countries, get involved in projects that interest you. You’ve just got to ask or say yes.
