Meet The Team

Mark Ayers

Structural Engineer

I applied to Arup mainly because of their projects. Here was a company where I could get to work on high profile, out of the ordinary developments, that I knew I'd be proud of. So when I started I had really high expectations. And guess what? They were more than met.

Within the first few months I was working on the AAMI Park getting involved in the early sketch phases, through to complicated 3D structural analysis and devising schematics. My focus was the bio-frame roof. It was a huge technical challenge because it employs a complex geometry. I was on the project for a few years and got to spend a lot more time on site ensuring the work met the architectural vision. Today I still have some involvement on the project. As it's almost complete, it's exciting to see the stadium take shape and come alive.

This year has been surprisingly busy. Despite the GFC, Arup have still been able to attract many great projects. I am working on a variety of jobs, each in a different phase of design/construction. It's enjoyable having a mix of site work, preliminary concept work and detailed design. The experiences have enabled me to take more of a central design role, as well as assist younger engineers. It's rewarding to be able to pass on knowledge and experience, because it was not that long ago when I was in their shoes.

The thing about Arup is that they offer really great projects that stretch you, and that alone would be enough to sustain the interest, but it goes further than that. They're really passionate about having a fantastic work environment and culture. Good projects and good people are a staple of Arup life.
