Meet The Team

Gareth Forwood

Buildings Services Practice

I started working at Arup in July 2010, working in the Existing Buildings team in Sydney. I originally studied Photovoltaics Engineering and I didn’t know a huge amount about the company before starting. At the various career fairs I attended, Graduates from previous years said Arup was a great fun place to work, with interesting projects, a great work/life balance and ample opportunities for experience.

My first week was testament to those Graduates – I immediately began working on real projects with a role that actually influenced design decisions. Within my first week I had already undertaken site visits and been exposed to client meetings and interaction. And, to top it all off, our fortnightly drinks night was held that Friday – score!

Since then I have worked on a wide range of projects (heritage buildings, office building upgrades, universities, hospitals and residential apartments) over a range of disciplines (ESD, facades, mechanical, lighting, electrical, sustainability and photovoltaics/renewable energy) and project stages (concept design, design specification, tender submissions, tender reviews). My latest projects include energy and mechanical modelling of the Singapore Sports Hub and writing a specification of works for a lighting upgrade at 201 Elizabeth St, Sydney.

I was truly thrown in the deep end, but was given all the help and guidance I could ask for to stay afloat! Arup provides all the training and opportunities that one could hope for, along with a great social attitude. I will even be spending six months in one of our South African offices on a short term assignment!
