Meet The Team
David Keast
Structural Engineer
I really wanted to work for a big international company that gave me the opportunity to travel overseas. I knew about Arup and checked out some of their projects. I remember seeing the Øresund Bridge, it really stood out. Here was a company working on projects that looked pretty cool and they were very different to other companies. That also applies to the other contributions we make as a company. Arup is socially and environmentally passionate and matched my values, which meant I could also get involved in charity work.
My role at Arup has been quite varied, from analysis and design to working with architects, and it’s multidisciplinary. That means you end up learning a great deal more than you’re exposed to at Uni. It also means I never know what I may be working on in the future.
The learning curve is steep and the level of responsibility and size of the projects I’m working on always surprise me. Not long after I started I spent six months in New York getting the Qatar IQ tower project underway. It was a great way to start my career.
Now I’m attached to a variety of projects, including a Trade Training facility in Townsville and the Cairns Base Hospital upgrade. As well as enjoying a new lifestyle, I also feel that I’ve developed, both technically and professionally, especially in my commercial awareness and project management skills.
The work I’ve enjoyed so far is above and beyond that which most grads would see.
